Bikram Choudhury is the founder of the world-famous Yoga College of India and the developer of Bikram Yoga. He was born in Calcutta in 1946. Bikram began learning Hatha Yoga poses , at the age of three. At five, he began studying with Bishnu Ghosh (Paramahnsa Yogananda’s brother) and quickly became a yoga champion. At the age of 11, Bikram won the National India Yoga Championship and remained undefeated for three years. At 14, Swami Shivananda declared him “Yogi Raj” (King of the Yogis).At 17, after an injury in his knee while weightlifting, doctors predicted that he would never walk again. Refusing to accept this, with the guidance of his guru, Bikram created his 26 posture series which restored his health.

Bishnu Ghosh was the first to scientifically document Yoga’s ability to heal the body and cure chronic physical ailments. Bikram was asked by Ghosh to start several Yoga schools in India, then traveled to Japan and opened two more studios.In a United Nations sponsored research project at Tokyo University, Bikram helped doctors prove that yoga regenerates tissues and cures chronic ailments. Combining Eastern discipline and Western medicine, Bikram perfected his comprehensive system suitable for all ages and levels of fitness.After curing The American President Nixon of a knee injury Bikram was given a Green card to live permanently in USA. Bikram has since brought his curative methods of Yoga therapy around the world and founded Bikram’s Yoga College of India in Beverly Hills, California in 1974. He quickly became the foremost yoga teacher in the West as celebrities, athletes, and others began to flock to him. Bikram has successfully brought better health and healing to millions of people around the world and has certified thousands of instructors from almost every country to teach his incredible series of yoga.
